Location: Based in Southeast with national travel

Kier Major Projects are looking for an enthusiastic, forward-thinking and collaborative Environmental Manager who will report into the Head of Environment. You will be part of a network of environmental professionals providing specialist environmental and sustainability advice to support pre-construction and construction teams with the development of large, world-class building and infrastructure projects throughout the UK.

We need your skills to enable the development process. We want to ensure that environmental risks are identified early and solutions integrated seamlessly into the project design and its construction. We also want to ensure that our customers benefit fully by deploying long-term sustainable solutions, considering development lifecycle, occupancy and climate resilience within our award-winning projects.

Purpose of role:

  • Deliver Kier's strategic goals for SHE through the development and application of specific Business Stream environmental programmes aligned to Kier Group's strategy and Critical Operating Tasks (COTs)
  • Provide advice and guidance to pre-construction and delivery teams to support the identification of environmental risks and opportunities
  • Support the development of solutions with a focus upon regulatory compliance, programme risks, mitigation costs and value-adding opportunities
  • Provide costed solutions to de-risk programme
  • Ensure project Risk Registers include significant environmental risks
  • Enhance the profile of environmental management with project teams as a critical requirement to deliver project programme and profitability
  • Actively engage with stakeholders, including regulators, conservation organisations and communities as necessary to shape projects and promote Kier as a Company that leads the way in environmental performance
  • Support the procurement and management of specialist contractors and consultants, challenging value and safeguarding project delivery objectives
  • Support the production of specialist environmental documentation, including site specific plans and risk assessments
  • Ensure compliance obligations are understood and implemented by project teams from the outset and handover information is collected over the duration of the project
  • Assist with the BREEAM and CSH co-ordination during all phases of projects ensuring site teams are collating necessary evidence
  • Ensure familiarity with the Integrated Management System (IMS) and ensure that processes are being followed by pre-construction and delivery teams
  • Collect feedback from the operational use of the IMS and make proposals to improve efficiency and effectiveness of its deployment
  • Develop and implement environmental improvement programmes
  • Conduct audits and compliance checks in accordance with the monitoring programme
  • Support the collation and analyses of environmental performance data, including Group KPIs, and report findings to internal staff, clients and regulatory bodies
  • Ensure accident/incident investigations are carried out appropriately to the required standard and include root cause analysis
  • Ensure incidents, inspections and audits are closed out
  • Prepare board report information
  • Review and advise on competency requirements for teams
  • Develop and deliver risk-focussed training to all levels of the business, including the supply chain
  • Promote participation in and assist with the preparation of environmental awards and recognition schemes
  • Develop and promote innovation, including attendance at industry forums and conferences
  • Capture and share industry best environmental practice and lessons learnt
  • Individual:

    * A degree in a relevant environmental discipline, or equivalent OR
    * Experienced construction professional with management experience
    * Professional membership of environmental organisation (SocEnv, IEMA, CIWEM, CIWM, CIEEM)
    * Significant experience in a similar or supporting post
    * Detailed knowledge of ISO 14001 and experience in auditing
    * Detailed understanding of environmental legislation
    * Experience with BREEAM and/or CEEQUAL
    * Good understanding of construction methodology and programme sequences
    * Good oral and written communicator at all corporate levels with good presentation and training skills and ability for public speaking
    * Ability to work on own initiative and deliver key objectives
    * Good time management and ability to work under pressure
    * Enthusiastic, collaborative and forward-thinking
    * Ability to positively influence others
    * Excellent IT skills
    * UK driving licence
