Environmental Assessment Lead


Location: Basingstoke or Fareham


Kier Strategic Highways is currently recruiting for an Environmental Assessment Lead to join the Area 3 highways maintenance contract.


Job Purpose:
  • Lead on Environmental Assessment for Area 3 schemes and to assist in the delivery of environmental schemes.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplined environmentalists to undertake Environmental assessments. Coordinate and advise on environmental input into design. Assist with ensuring colleagues are compliant with Kier processes and procedures. Undertake environmental audits and deliver training when required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Co-ordinate environmental assessment work, field surveys and mitigation design for legally protected sites, habitats or species
  • Accountable for the collection of ecological survey data and the EnvIS soft estate survey; imputing onto the EnvIS database and quarterly submissions to Highways England.
  • Undertake ad hoc updates onto EnvIS using a GIS system for topics including ecology, cultural heritage and dead animals.
  • Liaison with Delivery Team to ensure environmental issues are taken into account during scheme delivery.
  • Assist with the execution of environmental projects.
  • Support initiatives to improve land use and ecology through the Sustainability Group.
  • Liaise with non-statutory and statutory environmental bodies, applying for consents, licenses and approvals.
  • Line management of Ecologist, Environmental Technician and Arboricultural Inspector.
  • Manage and develop skills and competencies within the Environmental Assessment Team.
  • Liaise with contractors environmental elements of scheme implementation.
  • Undertake site inspections and Construction Environmental Management Plan audits.
  • Deliver training and toolbox talks
  • Adopt and implement the client's Policies and Strategic Environmental Plan, promoting environmental principles and best practice with Highways England.
  • Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace, setting a good example to other employees and ensuring awareness of and compliance with the general Health and Safety responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Procedures Manual.
  • Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.


Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Essential: IT, numeracy and literacy skills, able to operate spreadsheet systems, input, extract and present complex data to communicate with others.
  • Relevant degree and related experience environmental management and ecology.
  • Practitioner membership of IEMA or equivalent organisation and working towards Full Membership.
  • Experience in a Highways/Construction environment.
