Location: Godstone, Surrey

The Kier Highways Major Projects division are currently recruiting for a Works Manager to join the Smart Motorways business.


Kier is working in collaboration working with Highways England to deliver multiple Smart Motorways schemes across the UK, converting hard shoulders in to running lanes and installing sensors and signs to monitor and manage traffic flow so as to improve journey times in areas suffering from congestion.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Assisting in the definition and interpretation of the scope and objectives of the project.
  • Ensuring construction operations and materials are in compliance with project requirements.
  • Stopping work at any time if the safety or quality of work is in question.
  • Obtaining necessary services from Kier departments.
  • Controlling the project schedule to ensure timely and economical completion.
  • Ensuring that effective corrective actions are taken on identified problems.
  • Liaising with the Management team on management of construction activities.
  • Managing the General Foreman / Section Foreman and Foreman and ensuring they carry out their key responsibilities and duties.
  • Ensuring appropriate Labour resources are identified and are present on the project when required.
  • Ensuring appropriate Plant resources are identified and are present and deployed correctly on the project when required.
  • Ensure all Site Operatives are employed in accordance with the Working Rule Agreement and that their employment has been carried out in accordance with Kier terms and conditions.
  • Maintain a master file of operatives training and qualifications.
  • Maintain records of daily site activities and report on progress when required.
  • Undertake Health and Safety tours in conjunction with the Project Manager.
  • Actively contribute to the performance monitoring of the Subcontractors.
  • Carry out Personal Performance Reviews when required.
  • Look for and suggest any improvements in site operations.


Key Skills and Qualifications:
  • HNC (Construction related) or NVQ Level 2
  • Demonstration of knowledge and practical application of Site Construction activities and management of staff, operatives and subcontractors
  • Previous Heavy Civil Engineering experience
