Kier Strategic Highways are currently recruiting for a Design Team Leader to join the Area 7 highways design contract.
Job Summary: Responsible for managing a team of highway engineers and technicians developing highway maintenance schemes in line with clients briefs and HE technical standards and specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- To lead and motivate the design team, assist in implementing the business strategy and to achieve the agreed financial, commercial, and client performance targets
- Responsible for the management of a multi discipline highway design team and acting as Design Technical Lead ensuring that delivery is achieved in accordance with the company's management systems, Highways England Codes of Practise, Standards and Specifications including Health and Safety, project and risk management.
- Acting as Scheme Principal Designer on small and large projects
- Resource management for Task Order delivery
- Design management
- Carrying out the checking and certifying of design deliverables (including drawings specifications, professional skill and care certificates, reports and contract documents), and authorising where appropriate.
- Providing advice and guidance on technical matters, promoting a culture of technical excellence.
- Provide technical input to brief responses and proposals for work
- Produce and check scheme Task Quotations and Programmes
- Actively manage change control during the design period producing Early Warning Notices and Compensation Event Notifications.
- Ensure reporting of scheme progress, cost and other KPI's are undertaken in line with Programme Delivery Managers requirements
- Maintain a continuous communication link with the appropriate client project manager and ensure that all interaction is based upon openness and honesty
- Contribute to Collaborative Planning at programme and scheme level
- Developing the talent within the team by coaching and mentoring Engineers, Technicians, Graduates and supporting their technical career development aspirations.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
- A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience.
- To be a chartered / incorporated member of a relevant professional institution (MICE/MCIHT)
- Delivering client briefs through careful understanding of the requirements acting as Task Manager and Designer
- Acting in the role of Scheme Principal Designer
- Experience working in a collaborative framework encompassing design teams, contractors and client
- Detailed knowledge of highway codes of practice, standards and specifications and awareness of technological developments.
- Knowledge of NEC procurement and contract models, implementing change control
- Knowledge and experience of the main management systems & processes used within a similar business.
- A sound understanding of commercial activities, Health & Safety, CDM regulations, buildability issues and value engineering.
- An ability to produce accurate cost estimates and programmes from client briefs
- An ability to plan and resource effectively demonstrating processes for resource allocation decision making and supervision of work
- Managing risk
- Experience of using relevant software.
- Significant skills in the design management and project management of highways maintenance and MDP schemes on the trunk road network
- Able to carry out technical compliance checks for project team outputs
- Excellent communication skills
- Requisite leadership skills to positively influence the decision making process to ensure that appropriate solutions to highway needs or problems are identified
- Adaptability and flexibility in response to Highways England's urgent priorities
- Ability to build long term and flexible relationships
- Effective and efficient planning skills
- Risk identification and mitigation
- Ability and willingness to face challenges, solve problems and motivate others
- Mentoring and development of early career staff
- KPI reporting
- Must be computer literate.
- Ability to work without supervision essential, drive and determination to meet targets
- Fluent written and spoken English
