Position: Senior Technical Officer

Location: London

Salary: £45,000

The Job:

  • To provide expert technical support to members and the general public as well as carrying out site inspections and consultancy work. To work with the Director of Technical Affairs to develop and implement effective processes and procedures to continuously improve efficiency and effectiveness of the department.

Senior Technical Officer Responsibilities:

  • To deputise for the Director of Technical Affairs as required.
  • To oversee and manage the day to day operations of the technical department and technical consultancy business in support of the Director of Technical Affairs.
  • To provide expert technical guidance and advice to GROUP members, regulatory bodies, government, industry and consumers.
  • To take overall responsibility for the review and update of technical datasheets and other GROUP technical publications.
  • To represent the interests of GROUP and membership at external events/forums.
  • To support the Director of Technical Affairs in strategy, planning and budgeting for the department
  • To work with the Director of Technical Affairs to develop and implement effective processes and procedures to continuously improve efficiency and effectiveness of the department.
  • To support the Director of Technical Affairs in the effective management of the department's resources.
  • To take control of critical technical support instances and establish processes to manage and resolve issues as soon as possible.
  • To lead on industry consultations and formulate responses.
  • To build and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders and all group business functions to ensure effective co-operation and communication.
  • To actively seek opportunities to promote higher regulatory standards and awareness of the Federation.
  • To draft, review and update technical datasheets as required.
  • To produce technical reports and articles for publication as required.
  • To provide training and workshops for members and/or technical team as required
  • To report on technical matters and provide technical support at regional and specialist group meetings.
  • To facilitate meetings of GROUP specialist groups, including drafting agendas and minute taking.
  • To represent GROUP as technical expert at various external forums including at local and central government departments and agencies at required.
  • To undertake consultancy duties and report findings and recommendations including testing and calibration as required.
  • To support the GROUP Technical Helpline (telephone and e-mail, answering technical enquiries from members, industry and the general public, promoting the services of the GROUP and their members wherever appropriate.
  • To maintain up to date knowledge of all relevant regulations and technical standards.
  • To keep up to date with the latest industry developments including technical and technological advancements.
  • To effectively work as part of a team in liaison with staff at all levels throughout the GROUP and the GROUP's commercial companies.
  • To undertake such training as may be required to improve own performance or prepare for change.
  • To comply with all Company policies and procedures.

Senior Technical Officer Requirements:

Essential

  • Previous experience in providing expert technical advice and guidance to clients, consumers, stakeholders and external agencies such as local and central governments departments.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of mentoring and supporting subordinate colleagues
  • Highly accurate with good attention to detail.
  • Previous experience in presenting technical information to a varied audience.
  • Previous experience in investigating a broad range of technical issues with glass and fenestration products in use and presenting finding and recommendations in appropriate format.
  • Advanced technical knowledge in the areas of glass and glazing technology and systems
  • Extensive working knowledge of commercial and domestic glass and fenestration industries.
  • Expert knowledge of relevant technical standards.
  • Previous management/leadership experience.
  • Experience of managing, directing and motivating staff to achieve individual and departmental goals with stretching scope.
  • Proactive and highly organised, with strong time management and planning skills.
  • IT literate with a good grasp of Microsoft Office Suite.
