Job Purpose:


Carry out driving duties in connection with passenger transport services with the emphasis on the safe collection and delivery of clients, some of whom may have learning or mobility difficulties.

Take responsibility for your allotted vehicle and ensure compliance with all legal and company operational procedures and performance standards. Undertake any driving duties as allocated to ensure the most efficient delivery of services.

The position of Passenger Services Driver is exempt from the provision of Section 4(i) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, 1974 by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order, 1975.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the safe collection and return of passengers.
  • Assist passengers to and from their homes or from designated pick up points ensuring that they are safely seated in the vehicle. (The driver may be required to help passengers to/from establishments up to the threshold of the property or to the point where a relative, friend or carer can assume responsibility for their safety and wellbeing.)
  • Ensure that all passengers are able to travel in safety and comfort ensuring their good behaviour and general welfare in transit.
  • Rearrange Seating capacity/layout of vehicles where necessary to suit differing client needs and to carry and use appropriate equipment for the purpose.
  • Securing, as appropriate, wheelchair and passenger restraints.
  • Report any concerns to an appropriate Supervisor when passengers do not respond to collection, or where there may be a concern about the passenger's welfare, behaviour, safety or wellbeing.
  • Drivers will be required to remain in duty and within a specified area for the duration of the service operating hours.
  • In the event no driving duties have been allocated, drivers will remain in site and will be expected to carry out general activities to support the depot operations as instructed by management.
  • Take and collect vehicles to and from engineering establishments as directed.
  • Carry out your first user vehicle walkaround checks in accordance with VOSA guidelines, company procedures and any other legal requirements; recording any defects found on the appropriate documentation and reporting them to the designated, responsible person.
  • Drive in a safe manner, in accordance with legal requirements and take responsibility for the security, care and operation of the vehicle, it's equipment and keys etc.
  • Record and report all vehicle defects, vandalism, vehicle related and personnel incidents/accidents that occur during your working day.
  • Use digital tachograph equipment where instructed or drivers log book to record all driving hours and breaks. Note, when working under UK domestic hours, make sure you set the tachograph to out of scope before moving the vehicle.
  • Undertake both internal and external cleaning of allotted vehicle as necessary or instructed to an acceptable standard.
  • Fuel vehicle at, where possible, KeyFuel Stations (or where directed by management) and follow procedures for recording fuelling.
  • Follow, report and if necessary recommend appropriate contingency arrangements e.g. in bad weather and/or traffic accidents.
  • To Carry out any other jobs as directed by a supervisor or manager which falls within the grounds of reasonable instruction and is within the capabilities of the employee.
  • Be familiar and act in accordance with company / client integrated quality management procedures as issued and amended from time to time.
  • Undertake and accept appropriate training to meet the requirements of the client and to fulfil Health and Safety obligations.
  • To comply with all existing and future company policies and procedures.
  • Undertake all duties and interactions with employees, partner providers and clients fairly, without unlawful discrimination and with due regard to the companies Safety, Equality and Diversity policies.
  • Immediately report any infringements or changed to conditions of your driving license to your Supervisor or Manager.
  • Please note that it is at the discretion of management as to which routes and services drivers are allocated and deployed and that these can be changed at any time to meet the business needs.
  • You may be expected to work during unsociable hours at the reasonable request of management.
  • You will be expected to handle fare box income, check and validate concessionary card and issue tickets for travel.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Clean category D (or D1 as a minimum) PCV Driving License (without code 101) with no more than 3 points and no driving bans.
  • Ability to drive in a safe and considerate manner.
  • Capable of obtaining a clear, enhanced DBS (CRB) check to the clients standard.
  • Previous experience of working with the public.
  • Excellent customer focus.
  • Punctuality and good timekeeping
  • An understanding and helpful nature
  • Ability to follow instructions using common sense as the situation dictates.
