Connecting people, powering the UK

Kier work as part of a framework for Western Power Distribution to ensure its customers have power in their homes, businesses, schools and hospitals. We are an essential member of the team mainly working on reactive and planned maintenance in the South West of England, as well as the East and West Midlands.

We employ a large number of teams across the region, whose role it is to either respond to emergencies to dig down in the street or on private property to give our client access to repair their asset, or to lay new mains cables as part of their ongoing planned maintenance programme. Our responsibility begins with planning the works and finishes with us clearing site having put it back to the same or better condition than when we arrived, making sure that customers are happy and informed throughout every stage of the works.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an Operational Support Technician to join the team. Across the areas, we are in the process of rolling out a new electronic Works Management System (Geopal) to the teams.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve taking calls from Managers, Supervisors and Teams regarding issues with tablets/ systems and provide support and advice, to solve remotely if possible. You will also be maintaining and repairing onsite PDAs ensuring all are linked to the correct user and have the latest system and Kier updates.

In addition, you will be ordering and maintaining stock of backup PDAs ready for temporary or permanent replacement, as well as keeping overall records of every issue reported and actions to resolve, what units are in use and when replacements/ repairs are required and identifying any damages.

This role will require travelling across the Western Power Distribution contracts to the various depots and to individual teams on site to deliver, replace or repair devices to enable the teams to continue working safely and effectively. This will range from the East and West Midlands, down to Devon and Cornwall, so overnight stays will sometimes be required and flexibility on this is a must.

What do we need from you?

To be successful in the role, you will hold experience in maintaining and repairing PDAs/ Smartphones, as well as a good understanding of mobile work platforms. Organisation skills are a must - and being a team player is essential.

It would also be beneficial (but not essential) to hold an IT or Technical Degree. Experience in the construction or utilities sector would also be beneficial, as would any experience in a remote working role.

What will you receive?

You can expect a competitive salary and an outstanding package that includes a company can, a matched pension scheme up to 7.5%, 26 days' annual leave (with the opportunity to buy or sell holiday), two employee Share Scheme options, together with additional valuable benefits such as:

  • Free Life Assurance
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Access to Kier Rewards, our exclusive Discount Shopping Site with deals available at over 800 retailers
  • Plus, many more benefits geared to your wellbeing

    Pre-employment checks

This includes taking up your references, verifying your right to work in the UK, verifying your driving licence (if applicable) and a health assessment. Some roles may also be subject to further pre-employment checks.
