The ideal candidate will directly support the Materials & Waste Manager and the wider Sustainability Team, they will have oversight of the administration of the SmartWaste database. Audit the system to ensure that relevant compliance paperwork is complete and available. Focus on assurance that all business units are complying with legal compliance obligations on waste - our 'duty of care'. Work with Materials & Waste Administrators to maintain relevant waste documentation (WTNs, permits, waste carrier licences etc.). Assist in implementing the actions from the Highways Resource Efficiency Plan (REP) Assess key waste streams with high volume / disposal costs. Oversee the Recycled Content Analysis on top Highways directly purchased materials - work with Procurement Teams on feasibility and action, to increase the recycled content of key products. Assist with drawing up the baseline costs of waste management Work with Highways contracts and our supply chain to identify further opportunities to drive down waste and realise associated cost savings. Find methods to Improve efficiency of waste data collection for subcontracted schemes Identify opportunities for innovation related to materials and waste. Work with Environment, Operational and Procurement Teams to deliver all elements of the REP. Promote use of sustainable materials to design and operational teams. Put together and run campaigns and training workshops related to the role, as well as producing other promotional materials (reports, case studies etc.).

What do we need from you to be successful in this role?

  • Environmental/Sustainability degree or equivalent
  • Member of an environmental/sustainability institute (e.g. IEMA, CIWM)
  • Good experience in a Waste Advisor and/or Sustainability role.
  • Thorough understanding of the broad sustainability agenda
  • Clear knowledge in general sustainability issues, best practice and associated legislation
  • Confidently being able to in deal with key stakeholders, especially supply chain managers and client representatives, as well a wide range of internal staff from operational to design and management
