This is a unique opportunity for an experienced project manager to take on the challenging and rewarding role of helping to deliver the 10 year heritage management plan for the Palace. Over 300 years old, Blenheim is now a hugely diverse business with a duty to preserve its legacy. We are looking for someone who is passionate about preservation who will help to ensure that the World Heritage Site is protected and preserved to the highest standards.

This is a strategic role responsible for all built structures across the World Heritage site. Working with stakeholders and colleagues across a number of business functions you will be responsible for a variety of projects across the business both in respect of heritage restoration, supporting the visitor business and the wider estate.

Reporting to our Operations Director your responsibilities will include:

  • Management of the restoration expenditure over a rolling 10-year period.
  • Preparation and management of the annual built heritage budgets.
  • Management of the procurement process to deliver the heritage, restoration, and other projects in support of the Visitor and Estate business within the Palace and World Heritage Site.
  • Monitoring all works from a cost, quality and health and safety perspective (including CDM oversight)
  • Liaising with and managing a team of consultants to ensure effective delivery in all areas.
  • Carrying out periodic condition surveys of the WHS heritage assets.
  • Providing quality assurance of the standard of planned maintenance, repair and conservation work carried out on the buildings.
  • Carrying out post completion quality assurance inspections of all works on heritage assets to ensure full compliance with specification.
  • Producing and presenting to the Operations Director a monthly update on all ongoing and planned conservation and restoration projects
  • To manage projects across the business in support of the Operations and Estate Directors, these projects could cover a wide range of initiatives within the estates.

Our ideal candidate:

We are looking for an experienced project manager, whilst a track record in the heritage environment is beneficial, it is more important to be able to demonstrate a passion for the sector and a successful and strong project management background.

  • An architect with current ARB registration or a Chartered Building or Quantity Surveyor with current RICS (or equivalent) membership.
  • Experience in running construction projects.
  • A passion for the historic environment.
  • A strong track record in diverse project management, preferably but not essentially in the heritage environment.
  • An enquiring mind and ability to challenge professional teams.
  • An eye for detail.
  • A knowledge of building contracts.
  • Experience of successfully managing teams and stakeholders.
  • Good knowledge of historic building construction, current conservation, and maintenance practice.
  • Familiarity with current conservation theory and principles and a sound philosophical approach.
  • Ability to form critical, objective judgments and make decisions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to influence others, write concise reports setting prioritized recommendations for action, policies, and standards.
  • The ability to write concise reports and prepare presentations.
  • Knowledge of the legislative framework of building construction, repair, maintenance, health and safety and planning.
  • A full understanding of the construction and procurement process, in particular health and safety.
  • Flexibility, due to the nature of the role may require occasional attendance to site at weekends or outside core hours.
  • Experience of carrying out condition surveys of a wide range of historic assets in terms of type, age, material and construction.
  • Experience of standard-setting and quality assurance of conservation, repair and maintenance projects.
  • Thorough understanding of the mechanisms of decay and practical experience of a range of methods for the repair of historic buildings, including a thorough understanding of their impact.
  • Strong financial skills with experience of managing and controlling a budget.
  • Can do attitude and drive to take on any project to a successful conclusion.
