Health, Safety and Compliance Officer Job in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
Health, Safety and Compliance Officer job based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, visiting affordable housing assets across mainly South Shields, Gateshead, Darlington and Stockton. This is a great opportunity to join the affordable housing arm of one of the UKs largest property groups. The role is offering a salary of up to £35,000 + 27 days holiday + flexible and remote working + Comprehensive benefits package.

Established for over 50 years, they provide not just buildings but sustainable communities across the private sector, assisted living, retirement and leisure sectors. Reporting to the division's Business Partner the role will involve undertaking risk assessments, recorded audits and provision of Health, Safety and Compliance for your affordable housing region, ensuring compliance and safety. They manage more than 71,000 homes for rent and employ over 2000 staff across six registered providers operating in England and Wales.
Role & Responsibilities
- Follow strict fire safety legislation and guidelines set by the government and fire and rescue services
- Fire Risk Assessments / Reviews
- Undertake visual inspections of common areas
- Identify risks in relation to health, safety and compliance
- Work with the fire service, buildings and facilities managers, surveyors, fire engineers and landlords to develop, amend and implement fire safety plans
- Assist in the delivery of continuous improvement in their approach to health, safety and compliance
- Assist in the development of policies and operating procedures
- Identify risks for Affordable Housing and ensure these are captured and monitored effectively both in terms of operational risks and risks for individuals in carrying out their job roles
- Ensure effective skills and competency analysis is in place and supported by the provision of high-quality training, effective monitoring systems
- Coordinate the collection of evidence to support the annual Assurance Statement for the Group on behalf of Affordable Housing to validate that all relevant requirements are being met
- Stay up-to-date with any changes in legislation / new initiatives / best practice in fire safety and Health, Safety and Compliance and provide recommendations on areas for improvement
- Work with Health, Safety and Compliance colleagues to ensure Group Standards are translated into effective policies and operating practices for Affordable Housing
- Identify gaps in existing health and safety policies, and assist in researching, developing, implementing, communicating, consulting, monitoring and reviewing the new/ revised policies, procedures and safe systems
- Carry out checks on fire detection and firefighting equipment in line with manufacturers' instructions
-Take effective action to escalate / remedy failings in fire precautions as relevant Health and Safety Audits
- Undertake audits, identifying any potential health & safety risks and other significant risks
- Monitor performance in relation to property compliance requirements and health and safety through monthly desktop sampling of data, risk assessments, asset information, health surveillance records and training records and periodical on-site visits/audits
- Provide comprehensive reports that detail performance against Health, Safety and Compliance Key Performance Indicators, identify any issues or trends and demonstrate progress against plans where remedial action is required.
Required Skills & Experience
- NEBOSH General and NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate
- Minimum TechIOSH or above
- Knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance requirements for residential accommodation
- Full UK Driving Licence with ability to travel across the North East of England (occasional national travel will also be required)
