The role:

Reporting into the Senior Director, Human Resources, the interim Senior HR Manager will provide management and oversight of the operational human resources team on 12-month fixed term maternity cover contract. The company and department are in a period of growth and therefore future permanent opportunities within the department may become available.

The operational HR team covers the global remit of the full 360-lifecycle management of our employees from onboarding, payroll management, reward and benefits, training & development, retention, engagement, and wellbeing and offboarding.

The operational HR Team, based in Basildon, Essex consists of two Regional HR & Payroll Managers and an HR Administrator who support the delivery of a range of policies and processes. The team is supported by a standalone Talent Acquisition Partner and an HR Advisor who each report into the Senior Director, Human Resources.

The business is currently on an exciting growth journey and as such the HR department have various ongoing projects and initiatives that are geared towards optimising the HR service delivery and focused on value adding activity.

You will be highly self-motivated with a drive to organise, prioritise and delivery these activities effectively whilst ensuring the day-to-day operation of HR is effectively meeting business requirements. Previous management or supervisory experience of a commercially focussed HR team is crucial as well as the passion to identify areas of improvement and broaden the team's HR and business knowledge.

Key projects include:

  • The project management of outsourcing key areas of payroll to an already selected global provider
  • Support the ongoing project of the implementation of a new appraisal and goal setting process supported by SAP Success Factors.
  • Manage the service delivery of the operational HR Team through leading weekly priority team meetings, 1-2-1's, and the use of effective team KPI's
  • Strengthening knowledge of international employment law and best practices using external sources and sharing this knowledge internally as a team
  • Identify ways in which to improve our HR analytics to inform key business decision makers, ensuring the HRIS is always accurately maintained and being used as efficiently as possible
  • The delivery of our 2023 employee engagement agenda to include joint management of our 'Better You' internal engagement committee

Other key responsibilities & duties:

  • Payroll and Operational Activity - Ensure department KPI's are tracked to reach the overall SLA between HR and the business for all operational day - day objectives, including a timely and accurate monthly payroll process and subsequent reporting
  • Organisational Design - The effective implementation of all agreed developments made to business structures
  • Performance Management - develop and implement robust and effective performance management programmes that support the delivery of business results across the business
  • Employee Satisfaction & Engagement - Develop and implement commercially focused strategies and initiatives that drive employee satisfaction and engagement
  • Behaviours and Culture - Champion behaviours to develop a high-performance culture
  • Reward - Support the development of competitive reward & benefit structures that help drive business performance

About you:

  • Previous experience in a supervisory or management position, either as an HR business partner or as a HR manager from within a fast paced, commercial setting
  • Previous experience and/or exposure to the pharmaceutical or life science industries would be an advantage
  • A CIPD Level 5 or 7 qualification or equivalent level of experience
  • A good understanding of UK employment law and best practice
  • A good understanding of international employment law and best practice
  • Communication skills - delivering the strategies of the business will require you to talk to stakeholders from around the business. As such, you will need to be able to present effectively to different levels of seniority
  • Specialist skills - a keen interest and enthusiasm for talent management, specifically designing and deploying learning and development strategies and solutions (to include talent mapping, skills analysis, succession, and development planning)
  • General skills - you will need to be a true generalist, with a good understanding of the many different responsibilities of the function (employee relations, change management, reward, compensation & benefits)
  • Leadership - you will be working with line managers to deliver the function's strategy. As such, you must be able to lead in the day-to-day operations of the business, and on specific projects
  • Coaching skills - you will be seen as a mentor within the function and the business at large. You must be comfortable in offering advice to both your peers and junior employees
