Assistant Engineer – Geotechnical

Reporting to: Team Leader (Geotechnical)
Location: Design Services (McLaren House)
Job Purpose:
Kier Highways undertake a very wide variety of roles and activities in maintaining the Highways England and Local Authorities network. As part of this a geotechnical Assistant Engineer is required that has a specialism in one but ideally more of the following fields:
- Geotechnical design of foundations, slopes and retaining walls
- Inspection of slopes and retaining structures
- Asset Management and the Value Management process
- Development of geotechnical projects and all associated documents.
It is anticipated that the successful Assistant Engineer will have a good general experience in the majority of the areas highlighted above.
Tasks/Responsibilities as follows:
- Assisting in the preparation designs in relation to your field of expertise as set out above
- Assist in preparing technical reports
- Assist and develop of specifications in accordance with the MCHW
- Dealing with project related correspondence
- Maintaining high technical standards, consistent with the project brief
- Undertake site surveys when required
- Liaise with other teams within the business in order to deliver work
- Assist junior members of staff
- Carry out work in compliance with the specified Quality Plan and Design Procedures
- Complete designs in accordance with CDM 2015 and be pro-active in relation to risk mitigation.
- Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace, setting a good example to other employees and ensuring awareness of and compliance with general Health and Safety responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Management System.
- Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.
Typical Skills/Experience as follows:
- A good grounding in the detailed design of Geotechnical related projects.
- HNC/HND/Degree in Civil Engineering/Geo Technical Engineering and preferably on route to professional status
- Knowledge of geotechnical asset management and inspection for slope stability
- A good grounding in the Highways England Design Manuals and Specifications
- Experience using quality, environmental and health and safety legislation and management systems, particularly CDM 2015
