The Associated Builders and Contractors’ Construction Confidence Index shows stability in March with respect to nonresidential construction prospects. The CCI for sales expectation increased from 69.4 to 69.6 whereas the profit margin expectation fell from 63.3 to 61.8. The CCI readings above 50 indicate growth whereas below 50 are unfavorable. The Associated Builders and Contractors says an increase in the monthly backlog indicator of 8.8% in March 2019. According to the report the nonresidential construction spending activity lags the overall performance of the U.S. economy by 12-18 months. In first quarter more number of construction projects appeared to be greenlighted that translated into meaningful increase in construction backlog.

Associated Builders and Contractor has analyzed U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. According to the analysis construction input prices increased by 0.9% in April on a monthly basis of 2.4% whereas the nonresidential input prices rose 0.9% compared to March. The categories that experienced monthly price increases were crude petroleum (+13.9%), unprocessed energy materials (+3.7%), prepared asphalt products (+2.7%) and concrete products (+1.1%).
