Physicists at NIST discovered how to calibrate temperature measurements by monitoring motions of nanomechanical system governed by rules of quantum mechanics. While not yet ready for commercialization, method reveals how object’s thermal energy can be precisely determined by observing its physical properties at quantum scale. Initial demonstration has absolute accuracy within few percentage points, and NIST approach works over temperature range encompassing cryogenic and room temperatures.

Introduced as director of Canadian Operations for SME, Steve Prahalis will assume responsibility for growth, strategic direction, and financial performance of SME’s Canadian business and develop new Canadian opportunities for all SME business units. SME chief executive officer Jeffrey Krause cited Prahalis’s expertise and experience as “critically important” in going forward. Issued by NAM, Q1 results of 2016 Manufacturers’ Outlook Survey show that, according to NAM’s Robyn Boerstling, show “deep concern from manufacturers when intellectual property and innovation are threatened.” Survey polled NAM members about manufacturing outlook as well as key intellectual property issues. Respondents were asked about measures in state legislatures aimed at requiring manufacturers to turn over sensitive operational information.
