Fabricators and Manufacturers Association (FMA) and CNA announced recipients of 2016 Safety Awards, which recognize metal fabrication companies with ongoing commitment to safety excellence. On FMA’s behalf, its president and CEO Edward Youdell said this year’s winners “set an incredibly high bar” for manufacturers and congratulated them for doing so. CNA’s Franklin Maccotan added, “This accomplishment could not be achieved without a culture dedicated to safety and risk management.”

In partnership with National Science Foundation (NSF), BIO will feature Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)-funded, early-stage industrial biotech companies at BIO’s 13th Annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology (San Diego, CA from April 17–20). BIO’s Brent Erickson explained that, “Through the SBIR grant program, qualified companies can move forward and bring innovative technologies to market” and encouraged attendees to “stop by and learn about these exciting companies.”

Department of Energy (DoE) congratulated Jonathan Pershing for his appointment as Special Envoy for Climate Change at the Department of State. Over his 3 years at DoE, Pershing served as Deputy Director of the Energy Policy and System Analysis office. Pershing, who was also part of core team designing Mission Innovation, was credited as being “instrumental” in analyzing USA’s energy systems. He also led DoE efforts to support U.S. negotiating team prior to and at COP21 climate negotiations.

Inaugural U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER) provides information on how changes in USA’s energy profile are affecting national employment in multiple energy sectors. In addition to detailing number of workers already employed by traditional and efficiency-oriented energy industries, report provides numbers on projected new jobs. Yet, according to USEER, over 70% of all employers surveyed found it “difficult or very difficult” to hire new employees with requisite skills.
