Google and IEEE announced that Belgium’s Red Electrical Devils, a team from CE+T Power, has won the Little Box Challenge, a competition to invent a much smaller inverter for interconnecting solar power systems to the power grid. Success earned team a $1 million prize while proving that inverters can be the size of a tablet or smaller rather than the size of a picnic cooler. NREL provided critical analysis of the 18 finalists teams’ inverters to help determine winner.

EPA announced 8 contracts to small businesses to develop innovative technologies to protect the environment, funded through EPA’s Small Business Innovation Research Program. Phase II contracts provide companies $300,000 to further develop and commercialize products and ideas. Recipients include: Aspen Products Group, Inc.; Environmental Fuel Research, LLC; ETSVP-JV, LLC; Lucid Design Group, Inc.; MesoCoat, Inc.; Precision Combustion, Inc.; Sustainable Bioproducts, LLC; and Vista Photonics, Inc.
