Since 2004, Alliance to Save Energy has provided Unsung Hero Awards for those who go “above and beyond” on a daily basis to further energy efficiency, but who have not received recognition commensurate to their contributions. Through the 2016 Unsung Hero Awards, Alliance brings attention to the commendable work of 4 outstanding awardees: Robert Diznoff, Christopher King, Jennifer Loraine, and Blaise Sheridan.

Registration is open for ISO’s workshop on June 13–14, which will highlight worldwide potential for services standardization, as international trade in services becomes a greater driver in economic growth. “Global Services – ISO Standards as Solutions” will focus on how ISO International Standards can best help design, assess, and measure service excellence to benefit businesses and customers, in relation to existing standards as well as recommendations from event participants.

Ranyee Chiang, Chair of ISO TC 285, gave TEDxPlaceDesNations presentation on international standards, cookstoves, and health risks. Also, ANSI organized 1-day training Standards Alliance training in Accra, Ghana. Other happenings include free ASHRAE webcast on net-zero buildings (April 21), IAPMO release of its Drought Toolkit, IEEE-conducted survey on digital safety and cybersecurity’s future, as well as free APA training webinars on engineered wood products (April 8 to May 13).

Using detailed light detection and ranging data for 128 cities nationwide, along with improved data analysis methods and simulations tools, analysts at NREL have updated their estimate of total U.S. technical potential for rooftop photovoltaic systems to 1,118 GW of capacity and 1,432 TWh of annual energy generation, equivalent to 39% of nation’s electricity sales. Analysis appears in “Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Technical Potential in the United States: A Detailed Assessment.”

Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Lab-Corps program launched second round of clean energy entrepreneurship trainings. Fourteen teams of researchers from 7 DOE national laboratories began 7-week Lab-Corps entrepreneurial bootcamp at NREL. Lab-Corps aims to accelerate transfer of clean energy technologies from national laboratories to marketplace by training and empowering researchers to transition their discoveries into high-impact, real world technologies in private sector.
