On March 16, SME will kick off its Smart Manufacturing Seminar Series with session titled “Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing: Transition to Production” at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Agenda features key leaders and experts from various additive manufacturing and 3D printing companies and organizations. Attendees will hear how experts have transitioned from prototype modeling to full production quality, as well as discuss materials, processes, and 3D scanning.

3D Technology enables comfortable smart phone viewing.

Viewer discomfort is one of the biggest obstacles preventing widespread application of 3D display technology – especially for portable devices whose slim design poses an extra challenge. Researchers at Sun Yan-Sen University, China have developed new display based on “super multi-view technique” which works to reduce viewer discomfort. It also greatly decreases required number of microdisplays, which makes a compact design possible. Device is described in a paper in OSA’s Optics Express journal.

Standards Alliance, ANSI’s public-private partnership with U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has been expanded to allow ANSI to engage with 5 additional countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mozambique, Senegal, and Zambia. Partnership expansion provides technical assistance to developing countries specifically related to implementation of the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement. Expansion was made possible through Trade Africa initiative.

Aric Newhouse, NAM Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations, was named CEO Update’s Association Lobbyist of the Year. Specifically, he was honored for his work representing manufacturers before Congress and administration as well as successfully advocating and securing passage of Export-Import Bank reauthorization, Trade Promotion Authority, a long-term highway bill, various regulatory reform efforts, a repeal of the ban on crude oil exports, and permanent R&D tax credit.
