Using detailed light detection and ranging data for 128 cities nationwide, along with improved data analysis methods and simulations tools, analysts at NREL have updated their estimate of total U.S. technical potential for rooftop photovoltaic systems to 1,118 GW of capacity and 1,432 TWh of annual energy generation, equivalent to 39% of nation’s electricity sales. Analysis appears in “Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Technical Potential in the United States: A Detailed Assessment.”

Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Lab-Corps program launched second round of clean energy entrepreneurship trainings. Fourteen teams of researchers from 7 DOE national laboratories began 7-week Lab-Corps entrepreneurial bootcamp at NREL. Lab-Corps aims to accelerate transfer of clean energy technologies from national laboratories to marketplace by training and empowering researchers to transition their discoveries into high-impact, real world technologies in private sector.

In statement, Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan said, “President Obama’s last budget continues the solid and stalwart support for investing in a clean and efficient energy future that we have seen throughout his administration. Alliance applauds the decision to double budgetary support of clean energy programs, increasing to $12.8 billion in 2021, up from $6.4 billion in 2016, as part of the Mission Innovation initiative announced by Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz last year.”

Offered via High Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) program, up to $3 million in funding lets manufacturers use resources at Energy Department’s national laboratories. HPC will be used to apply modeling, simulation, and data analysis to address manufacturing challenges that aid in decision-making, optimize processes/design, improve quality, predict performance/failure, quicken/eliminate testing, or shorten time of adoption of new technologies. Applications are due April 21, 2016.

NIST published analysis of feedback from critical-infrastructure leaders and others on voluntary, federally led Cybersecurity Framework. Comments included within “Analysis of Cybersecurity Framework RFI Responses” affirm frameworks’ current uses, recommend refinements, and suggest future directions. There are 10 recurring themes among responses, and analysis, in addition to explaining each, offers associated key terms and example responses.
