U.S. EPA announced 8 experts – Michael M. Hurley, John Ridgway, Joshua Burman, Thomas Baker, Raymond Lewis, Raj Paul, Cynthia Walczak, Justin Wilson – joining Hazardous Waste Electronic Manifest Advisory Board. In addition to advising EPA on development and operation of electronic system for tracking hazardous waste shipments throughout USA, Board will propose actions for electronic manifest (e-Manifest) system that will align with EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy’s e-Enterprise strategy.

In her letter to congressional leaders, NAM Vice President of International Economic Affairs Linda Dempsey called for passage of legislation to release trade embargo on Cuba. Dempsey cited increased opportunity for economic activity between U.S. and Cuba as well as access for manufacturers to “a market less than 100 miles from our shores.” Dempsey also commended U.S. Representatives Tom Emmer (R-MN) and Kathy Castor (D-FL) for introducing Cuba Trade Act of 2015.

Changes made by FAA to its communication tower lighting standards were undertaken to save thousands of birds’ lives each year. Tower lighting configurations for tall structures, used to warn pilots when approaching obstruction, include white and red steady-burning, flashing, and strobe lights as well as various combinations of all 3 types. Updated in December 2015, Advisory Circular (AC) for obstruction marking and lighting dictates tower lighting schemes should follow revised guidance.

ANSI will exhibit at 2016 USA Science & Engineering Festival, taking place in Washington, D.C. from April 15–17, to further inspire and educate future generations of STEM and standardization professionals about standards’ significance. With its “Standards Are Everywhere” theme, exhibit will demonstrate how standards help support nearly everything kids take part in and rely on from day to day. Showcase will feature interactive elements with hands-on examples.
