We are looking for a Commercial Manager to join our Expanded Commercial team to work across projects based in Cambridge and London.

As a Commercial Manager you will provide leadership to the commercial team, establishing commercial procedures and process on projects.

The initial role will be based in Cambridge working on the Cambridge Cancer Research PCSA and then into direct delivery of this project.

Cambridge Cancer Hospital is a purpose built cancer research facility on the Addenbrookes estate. It's a 9 storey concrete frame with single storey basement utilising Laing O'Rourke's specialist DfMA column, lattice and Twinwall solutions. The structure is formed on a series of bearing and secant piles with pile caps and ground beams.

What will the role look like?

  • Sole commercial responsibility for Expanded's package of work on the project.
  • Form an integral part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for project delivery and client service.
  • Ensure interim applications for payment and certifications are issued and agreed.
  • Management, administration and settlement of subcontractors' accounts, including accountability for those delegated to your team.
  • Preparation and management of claims.
  • The flexible management of staff to provide an effective commercial service for the business.
  • Leadership of the commercial team; including identifying and communicating development & training needs, appraisal, retention of staff and assisting in
  • Providing staff with support and guidance on their job responsibilities.
  • Negotiating with client's representatives, sub-contractors and other consultants to achieve project results whilst maintaining group relationships.
  • Advise on contractual implications of intended courses of action.
  • Advise and manage commercial risks within the project or projects.
  • Ensure preparation of monthly contract review reports, communicate key risk, opportunity and change with transparency, in a timely manner.
  • Ensure preparation and issue of weekly Business Plan Review (BPR) information.
  • For the project(s) you are responsible for, ensure the contractual chain between head contract and supply chain is established and maintained
  • Preparation of monthly management accounts information.
  • Preparation of contractual and commercial input into Project Execution Plan.
  • Establish from Contract award the project "budget to build" in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that appropriate methods are in place to identify change and implement change control process and agreement in a timely manner
  • Ensure that contract documents are properly executed prior to project commencement.
  • Adopt appropriate measures for management of risk.
  • Keep your manager fully advised of any issue/risk which has arisen or might arise and which could affect the business/project.
  • Provide contractual and commercial support to work winning.

What skills & experience are we looking for?

  • BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying (or similar, a 2:1 or higher preferred)
  • NEC Option A experience
  • Extensive knowledge of main standard forms of contract including NEC and JCT
  • Procurement experience on large value contracts
  • Experience of claims preparation and dispute avoidance/resolution
  • Experience of Change Management in accordance with the contract
