Kier Professional Services is looking to recruit a Design Engineer to join the Civil & Structural team in Leeds.

Kier Professional Services (KPS) are an exclusive in-house resource, providing readily available expert advice to support understanding and resolution of technical project issues in temporary and permanent works. KPS are able to quickly mobilise resources to support project delivery and consistently deliver a dependable design service for buildability and safety.

We have a large team of experienced professionally qualified engineers, with a wide variety of technical knowledge that spans a variety of sectors. We are leaders within BIM, providing intelligent BIM models for a number of Kier businesses, and use a variety of innovative software solutions to assist with feasibility, optioneering and buildability reviews of a project. KPS also provide surveying capabilities (topographical surveys, 3D / laser scanning for modelling or provision of as-built information, and building monitoring) and dedicated material and geotechnical advice.


Job Purpose:

Contribute to the delivery of a broad range of complex Civil & Structural / MEICA and related services in both Temporary and Permanent Works throughout the Kier business, leading the delivery of some services; providing solutions which are safe and buildable (in both their temporary and permanent states), above all other considerations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Permanent Works design for buildings, highways, housing and infrastructure, as part of an integrated design and construct offering
  • Temporary Works design and checking, above and below ground in all materials, integrated with Permanent Works design as applicable
  • Tender and bid winning support including outline design schemes, feasibility studies, production and evaluation of concepts; focussed on buildability, efficiency and innovation; enabling cost estimates to be developed
  • Delivery of alternative solutions and value engineering, enhancing Kier's competitive position
  • Technical assessment and review of 3rd Party designs, ensuring compliance with the brief to meet client and Kier requirements
  • Provision of a technical help desk, providing engineering expertise and technical advice to support understanding; acting as a centre of engineering excellence, enhancing Kier's reputation for delivering engineered outcomes
  • Resolution of technical project, construction and design issues, incidents, defects and failures; incident investigation, examining causes of failure, rectification analysis, review, advice and redesign, supporting the SHE Department
  • Identification of technical risks and solutions to facilitate scoping, pricing, designing and construction
  • Site visits, surveys and inspections, reporting and advising on SHE issues; attending internal and external meetings on Kier's behalf; periodically working as an embedded part of tender and construction teams.

Fulfil the following Job Leader responsibilities, under supervision:

  • Agree technical requirements of the client remit, ensuring it is fully understood, questioning and challenging where necessary
  • Lead the development of fee proposals for review in accordance with Delegated Authority policy
  • Organise and lead the day-to-day workload of engineers and technical staff within the design team, ensuring technical compliance of the design to the remit
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legal requirements and Company policies / procedures, including CDM Regulations, the Kier SHE Management System (SHEMS) and design Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Oversee and contribute to the production of design deliverables, including calculations, drawings, reports and Design Risk Assessments
  • Develop and build a positive relationship with the client and/or design/site teams that supports fulfilment of contractual obligations and ensures KPS and Kier meet or exceed customer expectations
  • Be the lead representative at project and progress meetings with clients, as required, from remit development through to lessons learned


Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Completion of Initial Professional Development (ICE, or equivalent)
  • Experience in a similar role
  • Previous structural experience in bridges/buildings, with a track record of ensuring buildability and value engineering
  • Full driving licence
  • Valid CSCS card
  • Build and maintain working relationships with colleagues
  • Understand how commercial issues impact on your role, your colleagues and the business
