Engineer – Highways

Reporting to: Team Leader (Roads)
Location: Design Services (5th Floor McLaren House)
Kier Highways undertake a very wide variety of roles and activities and an engineer is required that has a specialism in at least one but ideally more of the following fields:
- Highway and Geometric Design
- Signs, road marking and lining design
- Traffic Safety Engineering and Road Safety Audits
- Pavement design and asset management
- VRS design
- Drainage design
Successful candidates will have a particular specialism but will also have a good overall knowledge of the Highway design field.
Tasks/Responsibilities as follows:
- Preparing and overseeing designs in relation to your field of expertise as set out above
- Preparing technical reports
- Development of specifications in accordance with the MCHW
- Dealing with project related correspondence
- Maintaining high technical standards, consistent with the project brief
- Undertake site surveys when required
- Assisting in project administration and control including monitoring of costs and programme
- Work in collaboration with the other divisions including Commercial and Delivery
- Mentoring, supervising and co-ordinating the work of others
- Ensure compliance with the specified Quality Plan and Design Procedures
- Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
- Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace, setting a good example to other employees and ensuring awareness of and compliance with general Health and Safety responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Management System.
- Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.
Typical Skills/Experience as follows:
- Significant experience in the detailed design of highway related projects.
- HNC/HND/Degree in Civil Engineering
- Knowledge of highway's assets and the appropriate solutions for renewal or improvement
- A thorough knowledge of Highways England Design Manuals and Specifications
- Experience using quality, environmental and health and safety legislation and management systems, particularly CDM 2015
- Project and programme management, with ability to use MS Project advantageous
