Environmental Specialist - Ecologist


Location: Basingstoke or Winchester


Kier Strategic Highways is currently recruiting for an Environmental Specialist - Ecologist to join the Area 3 highways maintenance contract.


Job Purpose:
  • To undertake ecological surveys and to assist the Environment Team with various activities, in particular undertaking environmental assessments.
  • Working in the Area 3 contract supporting highways design for Highways England contract.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage with and provide professional advice on ecological matters to relevant client personnel.
  • Undertake and manage ecological assessment work: field surveys and mitigation design for legally protected sites, habitats and species;
  • Carry out surveys to identify areas of potential and current ecological value, including desk study and field study for protected species.
  • Compile environmental assessments.
  • Liaise with contractors regarding ecological elements of scheme implementation.
  • Liaise with members of the public and third parties regarding complaints/requests
  • Assist in the execution of Designated Funds work.
  • Ensure compliance with the Information Management System and Kier processes and procedures.
  • Adopt and implement the client's Policies and Strategic Environmental Plan, promoting environmental principles and best practice with both Highways England and Kier Highways Area 3 Team.
  • Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace, setting a good example to other employees and ensuring awareness of and compliance with the general Health and Safety responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Procedures Manual.
  • Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.


Key Skills and Qualifications:
  • BSc and/or MSc in Ecology or related subject.
  • Sound and proven knowledge of UK and European nature conservation legislation and relevant local and national planning guidance and processes.
  • Possession of protected species licences would be an advantage
  • Excellent written English and report writing skills.
  • Drivers licence.
