As a General Operative, you will form part of a large work force delivering a number of services across the contract including Reactive Maintenance, Immediate Response, Schemes, Minor Planned & Drainage works. General Operatives will have a flexible approach to working within different teams & will from part of our Call Out rota system covering immediate response throughout the year and Winter Maintenance duties/Call Outs between October & April.

Key Responsibilities


  • Carry out highways maintenance duties as instructed. Including winter maintenance when appropriate.
  • Respond promptly to incidents on the network as instructed.
  • Work in close cooperation with team members and subcontractors, contributing to the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment for both the network users and work team by ensuring compliance all H&S procedures
  • Contribute to the promotion of customer care by working closely with team members to ensure client and network users are dealt with in a polite and courteous manner.
  • Responsible for notification to Network Control Centre on commencement and end of winter maintenance and occupation of Roadspace for Traffic Management
  • When trained to do so operate a variety of plant and equipment in order to carry out required duties effectively. Assist with ensuring that site and company equipment is secure at all times. Raise problems/queries with designated supervisor.
  • In absence of Ganger take responsibility for completion of daily worksheets
  • Carry out daily defect reports on vehicles and ensure vehicles are maintained in good order.
  • Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace, setting a good example to other employees and ensuring awareness of and compliance with general Health and Safety responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Management System.

  • Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.



    We are seeking candidates who:

  • 12ab Lantra traffic management trained
  • Basic Lantra VRS qualification
  • LGV driving licence group "C" minimum.
  • Asset Management Awareness - operational level required
  • Experience and knowledge of strict H&S operations and its practical implications
  • Ability to work using own initiative and as part of a team
  • Valid CSCS card
