Graduate Electrical Engineer Full time Hope Cement Works, Derbyshire

We are seeking a Graduate Electrical Engineer to start with us at Hope Cement Works in summer 2021. The role will report to the Senior Control Systems Engineer/Electrical Projects Engineer. The role will expose you to a diverse range of applications, software, control and instrumentation technology and computers, all used to maintain our plant's optimum performance. Our process is a 24/7 operation and the control systems are an essential link to ensuring operational standards remain consistently high, that downtime is minimised, and efficiency is maximised.


This is a unique opportunity to gain access at entry level for a graduate engineer. We are looking for a candidate with a degree in Instrumentation and Control, Control and Systems Software, Automation and Control, or similar. It is desirable that the degree be a minimum 2:1 with IET accreditation.

You will have the following attributes:

You will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Safety culture awareness - take responsibility for your own safety and that of colleagues and business partners
  • Ability to take ownership for your own professional development, willing to fill gaps in your own knowledge and experience through taking a proactive approach to learning and seeking information from within and outside the company
  • An ability to develop knowledge and skills in the preparation of engineering plans, URS, FDS, and system design to ensure these are delivered to time, quality, and cost parameters
  • A capacity to build a working knowledge of our process, systems and strategies for implementation

The role will eventually lead to you providing expert support, analysing performance, specifying improvements, tuning control systems, ensuring compliance and maintaining up to date documentation. You will also be able to investigate issues, generate solutions, resolutions and promote a culture of continuous improvement within our operations and maintenance teams. There will also be a requirement to be part of an on-call system to provide out of hours automation support.

In addition to training on the site's various systems, sponsorship for further training including Chartership will be provided. Over time, you will gain exposure to and experience in numerous technologies and systems, including system design, configuration, maintenance, and upgrade work with associated generation of graphics, control modules and equipment modules.

Hope is the largest cement works in the country, with a capacity to produce around 1.5 million tonnes of cement every year, about 15% of the nation's total production. First constructed in 1929, the plant sits in the heart of the Peak District, employing 200 people and using local materials to contribute around £60 million each year to the local economy. The works employs a wide and diverse range of people, from junior technicians and graduate trainees to highly experienced scientists and engineers. Breedon invest millions each year into plant improvements at Hope; The works has recently begun the process of a major upgrade of the control system which will provide the right candidate with an opportunity to experience a full project lifecycle, gaining exposure to both a previous generation Distributed Control System and a state of the art Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition system.
