The ideal Laboratory Manager will have the following duties and responsibility;

Provide a timely and cost effective testing service for the company's certification staff and external customers.
Manage the laboratory staff to ensure delivery of this service.
Manage the laboratory staff for their continued development and performance to agreed measures.
Ensure the testing facility is operated safely and in accordance with H&S rules, regulations and guidance.
To ensure testing equipment is fit for purpose, in calibration and maintained as necessary.
Develop new test equipment and procedures as necessary.
Prepare test, equipment, maintenance and safety procedures for the laboratory activities.
Take a lead in handling testing audits from UKAS and IECEx.
Provide training in testing and safe use of equipment for laboratory staff and certification staff as required.
To source, provide and carry out a calibration service in accordance with UKAS requirements.
Communicate with and when necessary, have face to face discussions with manufacturers or their agents.
Prepare estimates of cost for major laboratory (CapEx) expenses and prepare the business case.
Checking and countersigning the work of others in specific areas of work.
Evaluate subcontractors and providers of test equipment and service.
Appointing and supervising contractors for Heating and Ventilation, Electrical, Mechanical, slinging and lifting and fire prevention equipment to comply with current legislation.
Scheduling of preventative maintenance.
Day to day control and operation of all building services other than IT.

To be primarily responsible for managing the building including the testing facility, calibration activities and the services at Buxton. Also, to source, purchase and commission new equipment and supplies.
The Candidate
As the successful Laboratory Manager you are likely to have significant experience in the following;
Essential
-
General engineering knowledge with a workshop background.
Good communication skills.
Knowledge of calibration and Uncertainty of measurement protocols.
Experience in building service requirements.
Experience in current and company H&S requirements.
Experience in calibration and uncertainty of measurement methods and techniques.
Technical qualification gained through higher education in an engineering subject.
Desirable
-
Sufficient knowledge of the relevant Ex standards to be able to ensure appropriate testing methods.
Experience in the application of the Ex standards and the relevant testing protocols.
Experience in an engineering environment, particularly workshop practices.
Experience in H&S requirements.
Knowledge of H&S practice and legislation.
HNC or HND or equivalent related to engineering practices.
