Kier Local Highways are currently recruiting for a Leading Hand to join our seasonal surface treatments business. The season is expected to last for around 20 weeks.
Kier Highways design roads, bridges and intelligent transport systems (ITS), covering strategic and nationally important roads, as well as local roads serving local communities. Our projects range from major improvements to complete renewals of roads and structures. With specialist teams, we manage complex works from conception through to handover at the end of maintenance periods.
Key Responsibilities:

Managing Safety on site including:
- Giving Inductions and effective Tool box Talks and Briefings
- Challenging and addressing bad practices
- Encouraging best practices and innovation
- Ensure all persons attending or working on site are wearing appropriate PPE at all times
- Carry out on the job training of team members where necessary
- Ensure sufficient adequately trained and competent workforce are available to carry out the task set
- Organising and requisitioning site equipment/plant and materials to ensure completion of the works as programmed
- Being an Ambassador for Kier and the Client when dealing with the customer/public
- Co-ordinating with Line Manager and colleagues on managing work methods which are safe, technically sound, economically viable, feasible and consistent
- Informing Line Manager of anything which may impact/change resource requirements
- Effectively manage and oversee the day -to-day operational activity working within Client specification and providing the best service possible to our customer
- Establish good working relationships with Foreman & m Supervisor and other staff
- Liaise with the Clients representative in a professional manner and ensure that potential problems are identified and resolved at an early stage and escalated where appropriate
- Monitor the performance of site operatives and check/authorise daily work records for accuracy and correct completion
- Maintain daily records of site activities and liaise with Line Manager to produce information for progress reports
- Working to ensure safe, productive and quality working
- Support and promote a culture of safety awareness and safe working ensuring that all accidents, near misses are reported.
Essential:
- Experience of working in the highway maintenance industry and general knowledge in Surface Treatment
- Full UK Drivers Licence
- Commercially aware
- Computer literate
- Sector Scheme 12d Qualifications (M1/2/6)
- Sector Scheme 13 Qualifications (NVQ 3/4)
- Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card
- First Aid at work certificate (3 day)
