Mechanical Engineer - Breedon Group

  • Full time, permanent position

The key function of the role is to supervise & manage the performance of site maintenance activities executed by our 'In house' craftsman & contract partners, ensuring good quality work is completed safely, on time, to plan & within budget.

Leading a strong team of engineering technicians, you will be expected to maintain engagement by team development, maintaining good working relationships, improving health & wellbeing and supporting good team morale.

The key function of the team is to retain mastered plant reliability, so that we meet or beat our plant reliability target of 96.5% and 250 hrs MTBS year on year. To maintain & improve the key reliability principles of Inspection, Planning & Engineering Improvement.

Activities specific to the engineer's role are:

To take ownership and ensure plant safety, health, environment & quality compliance standards are met by:

  • Ensuring competence & training is kept current with respect to plant Isolations, risk assessment and permits inclusive of but not limited to working at height, confined space, hot work, mobile /fixed lifting activities, FLT & MEWEP operations.
  • Support health & wellbeing initiatives
  • Creating, monitoring & review of effective RAMS & dynamic STOP assessments for all works.
  • Implementation of our CDM process to ensure good coordination & communications of site work.
  • Encouraging proactive safety observation reporting of unsafe acts & conditions
  • Educating & sharing information by team discussion & toolbox talk delivery.
  • Manage standards of housekeeping within workshops and work areas (inc. tool requirement & management
  • Incident reporting and active engagement with respect to incident reporting & review process

To deliver effective & efficient maintenance program by:

  • The effective planning & scheduling short term maintenance work (priority 6,5 & 4 WO)
  • Maintain data, document useful information and update records within our maintenance systems such as SAP & Opralog. Actively drive the documentation of maintenance methods - job plans
  • Safely and effectively manage 'out of hours' breakdown repairs to reduce down time whilst capturing learnings for continuous improvement
  • Account for 'bought in' labour, direct goods & services
  • Liaising with the stores team to effectively managing and accounting of stores inventory inclusive of spare part asset linkage improvement, off site reconditioning process, inventory booking compliance, spare part storage & care.
  • The effective supervision & coordination of contract maintenance & within your area.
  • Taking ownership alongside operational team members to effectively deliver of major repairs & maintenance day outages.
  • To collaborate with other works teams to enhance reliability & deliver improvements
  • By striving to meet or beat target of 100% Maintenance Schedule Compliance (+90% Proactive)
  • By Regular review & managing workorder backlog.
  • Share learnings & best practices with team and others
  • Ensure quality of maintenance work to target Zero % Maintenance Rework Factor.

To develop self & team

  • Attendance & actively participating in key meetings such as maintenance area planning, weekly reliability review, monthly supervisor update, customer teams, incident root cause, major repair planning & coordinating.
  • Take ownership of your professional development with a view to IEng progression.
  • Manage team & develop talent inclusive of annual 121 review
  • Co-ordinate maintenance team training requirements
  • Promote & play your part in the management of our apprenticeship scheme
  • Assist in the support and development in new initiatives such as site improvement team & Internal contracting

Qualifications/skills/knowledge required:

    NEBOSH National General Certificate desirable or equivalent
  • IOSH Behavioural safety
  • HNC / Degree in engineering
  • IEng or equivalent
  • Relevant supervision training
  • Min 3 years relevant experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong Engineering supervision skills
  • Proven solution-oriented critical thinking
  • Attention to detail with the ability to work closely and effectively with a group of people at all levels
  • Excellent engagement skills
  • Good knowledge of core IT systems, including MS Word, Outlook, Excel, Project, teams, SAP, Opralog, assure, & Pivision.
  • Highly organised and driven with the ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload
  • Flexible attitude towards work to meet business needs

Knowledge of:

  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment regs 1998 (PUWER)
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment regulations 1998 (LOLER)
  • Pressure Systems Safety regulations 2000 (PSSR)
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (COSHH)
  • Maintenance management systems
  • Heavy maintenance experience & knowledge
