A leading civil engineering contractor delivering complex infrastructure projects across London is seeking an experienced Principal Temporary Works Design Engineer. The Principal Temporary Works Design Engineer will lead the design, coordination, and assurance of temporary works across a diverse portfolio of challenging civil engineering projects in London. This senior position plays a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of temporary works, working closely with project teams, designers, and stakeholders to deliver innovative and buildable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of temporary works schemes, including formwork, falsework, propping, excavation support, scaffolding, crane bases, shafts, working platforms, and access systems.
- Ensure all designs are fully compliant with BS 5975, Eurocodes, CDM Regulations, and relevant Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) guidance.
- Provide technical leadership to engineers and technicians, ensuring quality, safety, and continuous development within the temporary works discipline.
- Collaborate with project managers, site teams, Temporary Works Coordinators, and external designers to ensure temporary works are fully integrated with permanent works and construction programmes.
- Manage the design checking and approval process, ensuring all temporary works are appropriately risk assessed, categorised, and recorded in the project's Temporary Works Register.
- Provide technical support during planning, erection, use, and dismantling of temporary works on site.
- Participate in design reviews, audits, and incident investigations where temporary works are involved.
- Promote innovation, cost-effectiveness, and buildability in temporary works solutions.
- Represent the company in client meetings, technical forums, and professional networks such as IStructE.
Requirements
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (MEng/BEng or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), or actively working towards chartership.
- Significant experience in the design and management of temporary works within complex civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
- Strong working knowledge of BS 5975, CDM 2015, and associated structural design standards.
- Proficient in design software such as Tedds, Tekla, AutoCAD, Revit, or Robot.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
