Reporting to: VM & Schemes Manager (Areas 6&8)

Kier Strategic Highways are looking to recruit a Project Engineer to join the Technology team. A great opportunity working as part of the Kier Highways Technology Hub in a broad versatile role that supports the end to end service model, from concept through design to delivery, into maintenance, including support and delivering of technology / ITS / traffic signal projects mechanism for many Highways England areas and beyond as required.

Kier Highways design roads, bridges and intelligent transport systems (ITS), covering strategic and nationally important roads, as well as local roads serving local communities. Our projects range from major improvements to complete renewals of roads and structures. With specialist teams, we manage complex works from conception through to handover at the end of maintenance periods.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the schemes manager for ASC 6&8 work within the Kier Highways Technology Hub supporting activities and tasks through the scoping, development, delivery, construction, maintenance and co-ordination of our portfolio of Technology ITS projects across the business. Including but not limited to the following;
  • Contribute and support the identification, development and delivery of projects in many Highways England areas as required, such as but not limited to; Areas 7, 9, 3, 4, 1, 2, 8 & 6, PTS, F,T&I, TTD National projects, with DCP in Areas 9,7,6 & 8 and Local Authorities.
  • Carry out site investigations, inspections, surveys, studies and analysis. Prepare appropriately detailed reports on the required outputs, to include; issues, risk, options and solutions.
  • Manage small scale projects from cradle to grave, developing schemes, managing and supervising work on site and completing handover.
  • Prepare and review briefing statements, technical documents, providing fact based reports, evidence and feedback, assisting with work package preparation and administration.
  • Work to resolve problems or issues by providing solutions to support the successful delivery of project or design objectives. Offer supervision and guidance, utilising known techniques, drawing on previous experience while also exploring and adopting unfamiliar techniques, methodologies and innovations to resolve issues. Consider how information can be utilised to achieve specific project aims.
  • Work to, develop and maintain high technical standards, keeping up to date with client and industry technical updates and changes.
  • As required, attend and contribute to stakeholder liaison meetings
  • Contribute to safe and efficient design, delivery construction and maintenance of technology projects through on site audit, supervision and management.
  • Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace, ensuring awareness of and compliance with general Health and Safety responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Management System.
  • Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required.


Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Relevant Industry knowledge and experience.
  • Good working knowledge within the highways industry; including relevant knowledge of technology maintenance, design, development and construction delivery.
  • Experience working on site in a highways construction environment, on site supervision and management.
  • A good understanding of relevant Highways Technology interfaces e.g. NRTS, RTMC, RCC, TPMS, HADECS, and Local Authorities.
  • A good understanding of highways Infrastructure - roadside equipment, power supplies and distribution, communications cable networks
  • SMART Motorways and Expressway experience would be advantageous.
  • Ability to collate and analyse relevant data, then demonstrate findings in a report or presentation.
  • A diverse, highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills, with the ability to deliver detailed information and successfully manage time to meet deadlines, able to work independently with minimal supervision and take ownership of delegated tasks and duties.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office packages is essential.
  • A developing understanding of supporting factors such as health and safety, CDM, quality management and environmental management systems.
