Project Manager - Material Focus

Salary circa £37,000 and pension + other bene?ts

Flexible working

Hello! We're a not-for-pro?t start-up on a mission to get the nation reusing and recycling their unwanted electricals. We want to ensure as many electricals as possible are reused before being recycled, and that people understand how and where to do this. This role will focus speci?cally on mobilising the growing amount of tech stashed away in people's homes and businesses, which could be reused to help #FixTheDigitalDivide.

Unwanted electricals are the fastest growing waste stream in the world, and yet the number of people without access to digital devices is growing. This problem is systemic and has existed for years, but the pandemic has highlighted how critical this digital connection has become, and increased the need for digital connection. The world is becoming more and more reliant on technology for basic needs like banking, school work, staying in touch with friends and family, ?nding a job or getting essential healthcare. Frontline organisations working with these people are still in desperate need of digital devices to help everyone across the UK stay connected with the outside world.

We want to change what people and organisations do with their old devices once they no longer need them. The default for too many of us - households and businesses - is to bin them or to stash our old devices away. But imagine the waste - either precious materials being lost forever, or cluttering up homes and of?ces when they could be being reused by people without the tech to connect them to the outside world. We want to ensure all devices are kept alive through reuse or recycling.

There are many organisations who have been working on this issue for years, and many more who have responded with emergency solutions during the pandemic. In particular, we have been working with social change charity, the Good Things Foundation, who are setting up a National Device Bank to accept digital devices from businesses, refurbish them, and get them back out to the people who need them most. They also ensure people have training to use the devices, and the data to allow them to connect through a national data bank. There is still however no national solution for consumer donations. Working with others, like the Digital Poverty Alliance, our ambition is to create a sustainable, long term solution as the new default for all of us when we want to get rid of our old tech.

DIGITAL INCLUSION PROJECT MANAGER

Material Focus, the organisation behind the new UK-wide Recycle Your Electricals campaign

The role

We are looking for a sustainably minded project manager to help us research, develop and implement a simple system to make it easier for the public to ensure their old tech. The key thing is this should bring together or complement existing options already in place.

You'll be resourceful, organised, collaborative and be able to think critically. You'll be naturally systematic and enjoy the challenge of working out the best way to identify the gaps and create new collaborative solutions to solve this growing problem. You'll be able to shape and de?ne the role as you discover more information.

You'll need to collaborate with the Good Things Foundation, the Digital Poverty Alliance, LOTI, Hubbub, local councils and many others working on the issue. You'll ?nd, verify and record all the donation options across the UK in our Recycling/ Reuse locator in a way that ensures this information remains up to date. The current systems for recycling and reuse aren't suf?cient. You'll identify information gaps and locations where it is still too hard to donate digital devices. And you'll work with the internal team to create communications to ensure businesses and individuals have the information they need in order to donate.

Alongside this project there will be opportunities to get involved in other projects in the future.

You'll be part of a small and growing team who are all committed to our challenge to get the nation reusing and recycling all of their unwanted electricals. You can come in and have an immediate impact.

We are looking for a self-starter who is focussed on delivery, and is passionate about working on environmental and social good campaigns. You'll thrive on the fact that we're just starting up, with the opportunity to quickly show results.
