Our Research & Development team supports the global Laing O'Rourke business through improving delivery, certainty and productivity, and advancing our reputation as leaders for innovation and engineering excellence.
What will the role look like?
This role is focused on Green Energy Infrastructure within the Global Technology & Innovation function at Laing O'Rourke. As a Senior Research & Development Engineer you will work to identify and implement methods to increase certainty, and sustainability in the delivery of Green Energy Infrastructure, including electrification. hydrogen, carbon capture and storage and offshore wind. Central to the role will be Design for Manufacture and Assembly, offsite and onsite advanced manufacturing and digital technologies to help us address the challenges at scale, and grow our business in this sector.
What are the duties involved in this role?
- Analyse and develop the opportunity for the key elements of Green Energy Infrastructure, applying Design for Manufacture and Assembly methodologies to enable manufacturing approaches to delivery at scale.
- Analyse and develop alternative manufacturing strategies, including advanced manufacturing technologies, including for example pre-casting and 3D-printing
- Leverage data from across the business to produce coherent and comprehensive analysis and reports to support management with regards to investment, and business planning.
- Assist in preparation of tenders and presentations for work winning and funding opportunities.
- Visit client sites as and when required to review performance and develop relationships with the client and operations teams.
What are the desired skills for this role?
- Comprehensive technical design or delivery experience within an engineering role, ideally with practical experience of sustainability issues within a design and manufacturing environment.
- Great communication and influencing skills, and the ability to critically analyse and challenge.
- A keen interest in existing and emerging material technologies, and how to leverage these to evolve traditional practice.
- Degree qualified in Civil / Structural Engineering, or other industry recognised technical or engineering qualification (e.g. HNC, HND, NVQ level 4) plus demonstrable experience in a civil/structural design or delivery environment.
- ICE / IStructE or working towards chartership, with comprehensive design or delivery experience, or a post-graduate doctorial engineering or sustainability qualification.
