Location: London (travel around Greater London will be required)


Kier Highways are looking to recruit a SHE Advisor to provide safety, health and environmental support to LoHAC and multiple London Borough highways maintenance contracts.

Kier Highways design roads, bridges and intelligent transport systems (ITS), covering strategic and nationally important roads, as well as local roads serving local communities. Our projects range from major improvements to complete renewals of roads and structures. With specialist teams, we manage complex works from conception through to handover at the end of maintenance periods.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Under the direction of the Business Unit Senior SHE Managers deliver Kier's strategic goals for SHE through the support and application of SHE programmes aligned to Kier Group and Highways strategy.
  • Promote Kier's vision and values to internal and external stakeholders, in-particular for Safety, Health & Environment.
  • Ensure Kier Highways remains compliant with all legislation regarding Health Safety and the Environment.
  • Drive to deliver continual SHE improvements across the Kier Highways Business Unit.
  • To advise and support the implementation of the Kier Safety Health Environmental Management system (SHEMS) for Highways.
  • Review and advise and update of local SHE Standards, Guidance documents and Forms to align with legislation, approved working practices and industry guidance.
  • Support and advise operational teams on SHE issues as deemed necessary, and to ensure that the Kier Group SHE policies and any local guidance are fully aligned in order that no conflict or confusion exists.
  • Support supply chain partners in collaborative working initiatives to achieve a safer, healthier working environment.
  • Ensure all accidents, incidents and near misses are correctly reported as per Kier Standards.
  • Share and populate SHE lessons learnt and other High Value Learning Events (HVLEs) across the Kier Highways business.
  • Work with Kier Environmental teams to ensure full compliance with legislative and company requirements to achieve environmental targets and operational goals.
  • Conduct site inspections and work with operational teams to continually improve better working standards.
  • Contract focal point for AIRSWEB system. Working with contract teams to ensure alignment and accurate reporting.
  • Manage and support Certification to ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001 with a view of achieving 45001 in 2019.
  • Support Kier Group and Highways initiatives as requested.


  • Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • NEBOSH diploma/Certificate or equivalent (or demonstrable IPD/CPD equivalent) in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Working understanding of SHE legislation
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001 Standards
  • Experience in similar or supporting post
  • Good oral and written communicator skills
  • Good training skills and ability for public speaking
  • Ability to work as part of a team or independently
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Notices & responds to others' needs
  • Ability to positively influence others
