Senior Structural Engineer

The Senior Structural Engineer (SSE) shall be technically responsible for preparing, checking, and approving all structural design calculations associated with the production of precast concrete solutions, utilising the full suite of products and solutions within Laing O'Rourke's manufacturing capability. These solutions will not only be deployed to meet the performance criteria but also with full consideration to design, manufacturing and installation efficiency. The SSE will perform a leading role in the development of solutions in both the work-winning environment and where Projects have been secured. In all cases they will ensure that client requirements are thoroughly understood and ensure the design team, where applicable, are fully attuned to designing for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) in line with Laing O'Rourke's design guidance and product catalogues. This will include the provision of design technical advice for all phases of projects.
The role holder must have strong influencing skills able to bring about desired outcomes with the Consultant and Client Communities.
Role Accountabilities:
- To make sure all designs are fully compliant at all times with all relevant design and Construction Design & Management Regulations, 2007 (CDM)
- Interface with design engineers/CAD engineers having overall responsibility for ensuring that they are fulfilling their own defined job roles
- Assist the commercial team to prepare and issue enquiries to external consultants for design detailing packages
- Manage relationships with 3rd party designers to understand their current resources, skills, availability and operational issues
- Ensure full adherence to all quality control procedures and remain compliant with authorisation and approval processes both internally and externally
- Carry out, check and, where authorised approve design documentation
- Use engineering judgement to assess activities taking place in the design office and challenge those producing them. Have confidence to stop any work that could lead to unsafe designs or to bad engineering practice, resolving issues to allow the activity to recommence
- Provide value engineering in determining the best solution for engineering problems
- Have an understanding of the capabilities and constraints of all manufacturing plants and
- equipment for the manufacture of precast concrete
- Earn a reputation for innovative engineering expertise and excellence
- Fully understand Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles (DFMA), ensuring good knowledge of materials, processes, & manufacturing constraints. A good understanding of associated assembly methods & costs is also required
- Maintain awareness of ongoing product development and provide input where required to ensure effective development of existing products and introduction of new products
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and technical standards in relation to building and civil engineering Structures
- Coordinate inter-disciplinary design interfaces between all sections of a project and communicate technical issues between project management, designers and consultants
Experience Required:
- A structural background is essential
- Previous experience in a structural design engineer role
- Significant reinforced concrete design and detailing experience essential
- Structural finite element model experience required. Specifically SCIA is essential
- Knowledge of 3-D CAD modelling and its principles required
- Good understanding of site construction techniques and building design principles
- Understanding of Precast concrete manufacture. Preferable but not essential
- Knowledge and experience of software for the design and detailing of reinforced concrete
- Understanding of Design requirements for Manufacture
- Self-motivateded and proactive individual capable of leading activity and working under own initiative
- Degree-level education; Chartered Structural Engineer or working towards within 24 months
- Previous project management experience essential
- Experience dealing with people at all levels of an organisation required.
- PC-literate, (Various design package experience)
- People management skills and team-oriented
