A leading environmental consultancy is seeking a skilled Surface Water Specialist to join their Johannesburg-based team. This role is ideal for a professional with strong expertise in GoldSim modelling and a background in water resources, hydrology, or environmental engineering-particularly within the mining industry.

You'll play a key role in developing, calibrating, and interpreting probabilistic water balance models to support sustainable water management in complex mining environments. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you'll contribute to both local and regional water resource assessments while integrating cutting-edge modelling with environmental and operational planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage probabilistic water balance models using GoldSim.
  • Conduct hydrological analysis and scenario-based risk assessments for water supply, contamination, and operational planning.
  • Simulate contaminant transport and assess salt load dynamics, acid mine drainage potential, and geochemical speciation.
  • Support water quality forecasting, dilution studies, and mine closure planning.
  • Collaborate with engineers, hydrogeologists, and environmental scientists to integrate modelling into broader project frameworks.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations, and stakeholder documentation.
  • Mentor junior staff and promote best practices in surface water modelling and data management.
  • Contribute to compliance efforts aligned with local and international water regulations.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Water Resources, or a related field (Master's preferred).
  • Proficiency in GoldSim and a strong grasp of probabilistic modelling methods.
  • Solid knowledge of hydrology, water quality dynamics, and mining-related water challenges.
  • Experience with geochemical modelling and water quality forecasting techniques.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and project coordination skills.
  • Familiarity with GIS, data analysis tools, and integrated water management strategies is advantageous.
