There is an exciting opportunity to join Bellway, one of the UK’s largest house builders. Our Yorkshire Division, located in Leeds is looking to recruit a Technical Director to join the Division. The Role The role of Technical Director reports into the Divisional Managing Director and is responsible for effectively leading and managing the Division’s Technical function ensuring a practical and cost-effective technical service to the Division. This will incorporate site evaluation, architectural and engineering design as well as the investigation of any technical problems and the provision of economical and viable solutions. The Technical department are involved from inception to completion. Principal accountabilities of the Technical Director role include: Effectively work as part of the senior management team and take a holistic approach to managing challenges and issues. Lead, motivate, communicate and develop the technical team to ensure that they are fully engaged to achieve best performance to meet the needs of the business. Effectively manage the Division’s technical function to ensure best practices are followed, costs are controlled, the department maximises revenue generation and contribution to the Division’s operating profit and increases the value added to the Division. Advise the land department on the technical viability of new sites. Ensure planning permissions and other statutory approvals e.g. S104 / S38 agreements are obtained in a timely manner. Ensure the technical department procedures, layouts and technical reports for land appraisals the required working drawings are prepared to the agreed date schedule. Ensure and monitor that external consultants are briefed and managed on the preparation and issue of production information in accordance with their appointment and to an agreed programme as required to meet the needs of the Division. Liaise on a regular basis with the Commercial teams (Buying and Surveying) to ensure that all activities are delivered to the agreed time/cost/service specification. Ensure that all technical team interventions are within budgets and forecasts as well as in line with Group procedures and protocols. Provide accurate progress updates and regular reports to the Managing Director. Liaise with Group Technical Director on all ongoing initiatives and strategies. Experience, Qualifications and Skills Experience Extensive experience working at a senior level within the housebuilding industry as either a Head of Technical / Technical Director or equivalent running numerous projects simultaneously. A good level of knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety/CDM Regulations, LABC/NHBC requirements, Building Regulations, Planning System, Codes of Practice, Party Wall Awards and other associated legislation connected with both house and flat construction Experience of effectively leading and managing a team. Qualifications and Training Qualified as a Civil / Building Engineer, Architecture or Construction related degree level or HNC/HND in a built environment subject with relevant experience. CSCS card or equivalent Current full driving licence. Skills and Aptitude Strong communication, listening and presentation skills. Excellent attention to detail Methodical, conscientious, organised and works to deliver high standards. The ability to recognise problems and deal with them in a speedy and effective manner. Ability to manage and motivate a team. Ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrates the ability to problem solve and delegate effectively.
