The Tool Maker (Tool Technician) will play a critical role in supporting aerospace manufacturing and MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) operations by ensuring the availability, accuracy, and reliability of all tooling, jigs, and fixtures. This position is responsible for the manufacture, servicing, and repair of high-precision tools used in the production and development of aircraft components.
The Tool Maker (Tool Technician) will also support prototype development, contribute to tooling improvements, and uphold the highest levels of safety, quality, and compliance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manufacture, service, and repair a wide range of tools, jigs, and fixtures to support both new product development and existing aerospace production.
- Operate manual machine tools to fine tolerances, including lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, and horizontal boring machines.
- Work from detailed technical drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions to produce high-precision components.
- Apply precision measurement techniques using a variety of instruments to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Carry out maintenance and modifications on existing production tooling and fixtures to ensure optimal performance.
- Support the assembly and testing of prototypes by manufacturing and adjusting tooling solutions.
- Provide practical input on tooling design, fabrication methods, and process improvements.
- Liaise closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to resolve technical issues and ensure tool readiness.
- Maintain accurate records of tooling activities, including the Practical Experience Record (PER) where applicable.
- Comply with all company procedures, including health & safety (OHM), quality management (CMM), and standard operating procedures (SOPM).
- Adhere to all environmental and regulatory requirements as part of routine working practices.
- Train and mentor junior staff when required, in line with qualifications and experience.
- Use basic computer systems for logging, tracking, and documentation tasks (e.g. spreadsheets, word processing, tooling databases).
- Take full responsibility for the quality and accuracy of work completed independently or with minimal supervision.
Qualifications, Experience and Attributes Required:
- Educated at least at GCSE level or equivalent.
- Ability to communicate fluently in written and spoken English.
- Proficiency in either milling or turning machines is required. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings accurately.
- Strong problem-solving, planning, and organisational skills.
- Effective communicator and team player, able to work across departments.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of supporting continuous improvement and operational efficiency.
- Tool room experience preferable but good all rounded experience within a workshop environment essential.
- Some basic knowledge of welding (Gas, MIG, TIG, Stick) is advantageous.
- A proactive team player with a flexible and positive attitude towards workshop housekeeping and general responsibilities.
- Strong communication and decision-making skills.
- Able to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Working Conditions:
- The candidate may be required to work shift.
- On occasions they may be required to change hours of work to ensure facility has cover at all times.
