Position: Senior Digital Engineer

Location: East West Rail

The East West Rail scheme will re-establish a rail link between Cambridge and Oxford to improve connections between East Anglia and central, southern and western England.

Our Digital Engineering team used model authoring software to model, quantify and schedule the 1million m3 earthworks, which was pivotal to the planning of the 18-mile scheme and was utilised in digital setting out and machine control scheme wide.

In addition, they also developed a digital tool set which enabled detailed 4D animations including plant movement for project critical elements of work over the West Coast Mainline, the UK's busiest rail route. This was utilised for programme validation and in the delivery of site and task briefings resulting and was key to them delivering the work on time and within budget.

We are looking to recruit a high calibre and experienced Senior Digital Engineer to join the LOR Digital team. Reporting into a Lead Digital Engineer you will support the development, implementation and deployment of Laing O'Rourke's digital engineering systems with a focus on helping our digital transformation.

Responsibilities focus on supporting our digital team in the successful implementation of key digital initiatives for the business which include new and advanced methods of using data, 3D modelling and visualisation for design, manufacturing and construction.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leads the setup and implementation of Digital Engineering on projects by applying appropriate influence, input, resource, process and protocols at bid, pre-construction, construction, commissioning, handover, operation and maintenance.
  • Influences and supports the development of LOR staff to deliver Digital Engineering in line with their discipline specific responsibilities, through upskilling, training, workshops and regular communications utilising key project relationships.
  • Leads the development of project specific solutions to deliver in accordance with our Digital Engineering Deliverables Menu.
  • Seeks out, influences, develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, to deliver BIM strategies.
  • Actively contributes towards and promotes best practice and the development of the Digital Engineering service offering. Develops and encourages direct reports through constructive feedback and mentoring to ensure consistency in delivery. Seeks out opportunities to influence and share lessons learnt beyond direct line management reporting lines.
  • Lead any requirement for authoring and development of the 3D model, having full and up to date knowledge of all project information and documentation and having agreed level of detail with project team.
  • Agree and lead DE implementation in alignment with Business strategy, Bid team win themes and support requirements, and manage delivery and resource accordingly to agreed deadlines.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with key stakeholders, (eg bid/project senior leadership team, business unit specific).
  • Responsible for ensuring governance and compliance with well defined QA procedures and processes, and actively participate in further development, including best practice relating to project implementation.

A good understanding of BIM industry standards and good understanding of multiple BIM processes and platforms. As this is a leadership role you will be responsible for a team of Digital / BIM professionals. You will also need excellent communication and teamwork skills and have knowledge of the design, manufacturing and construction process.

The role will also entail supporting the development of other digital tools and knowledge of applications such as ProjectWise, Microstation, AECOsim and other BIM programmes.

  • Degree in BIM Engineering or similar
  • Microstation / AECOsim / ProjectWise / Navisworks
