Role overview

Breedon has an exciting development opportunity for the right person to join our welcoming Reliability & Maintenance team as a Trainee Engineer. This role would suit either a mechanical engineering graduate OR an experienced technician who is looking to advance to an engineering position.

The role sits within our Hope Works Cement plant in the Peak District. We are the largest cement manufacturer in the country, with a capacity to produce around 1.5 million tonnes of cement every year, about 15% of the nation's total production. First constructed in 1929, the plant sits in the heart of the Peak District, employing 200 people at our site and using local materials to contribute around £60 million each year to the local economy. Our total employee population is around 3000 people, and we are distributed all over the UK and Ireland. We employ a wide and diverse range of people, from junior technicians and graduate trainees to highly experienced scientists and engineers. We are committed to investing in the development of our people and identifying new talent.

The successful candidate would start with us at Hope Cement Works in summer 2022. Working within our highly experience Reliability & Maintenance team you would gain an in-depth knowledge of our operation, whilst having the time to gain experience in various engineering roles within the team via a structured development program that will ultimately enable you to professionally develop with confidence to Incorporated and Chartered Engineer's level.

You will learn how to maintain and master reliability of a diverse range of heavy engineering equipment such as Crushers, Grinding Mills, Process Fans, filters, kilns, Coolers, conveyors, pneumatic conveying systems, silos & road /rail loading facilities.

The structured trainee engineers' program will allow you to develop in a wide range of disciplines such as: technical plant inspection, engineer planning, project management, financial control, execution of plant shutdowns, site engineering & management. You will also be tasked to investigate issues, generate solutions, resolutions and promote a culture of continuous improvement within our operations and maintenance teams. All these skills are used to maintain our plant's reliability & optimum performance. Our process is a 24/7 operation and sound maintenance & reliability philosophies are an essential link to ensuring operational standards remain consistently high, that downtime is minimised, and efficiency is maximised.

You will have the following attributes:

You will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Be a mechanical engineering graduate OR an experienced technician who is looking to advance to an engineering position
  • Safety culture awareness - take responsibility for your own safety and that of colleagues and business partners
  • Ability to take ownership for your own professional development, willing to fill gaps in your own knowledge and experience through taking a proactive approach to learning and seeking information from within and outside the company
  • An ability to develop knowledge and skills in the preparation of any challenges posed
  • A capacity to build a working knowledge of our maintenance & reliability systems and strategies for implementation

Who are we looking for?

Someone who is graduating in the summer of 2022 with Engineering Degree.

Or someone with an Advanced apprenticeship qualified with 3- 5 years' experience, has or looking to complete a distance learning Engineering Degree.

After 3-5 years of training (dependent on candidate progression) the role will eventually lead to you becoming a valued part of the team holding an engineering position as part of our long-term succession planning.
